Skills Mastery

One of the thing that can help you be successful in your workplace is to have their required skills. Some skills may be already in you and there are other skills which you may be able to learn throughout your stay in a company.  Once you already have these skills, the next step is to master it.

Although it sounds time-consuming to master a thing, it is really taking time to do it. The key thing is to be consistently practicing or doing it. Remember, being patient in mastering these skills will give you many benefits. It will not happen in an instant but in the long run. They say practice makes you perfect. This may sound cliche, but is a reality.

I just want to share this story with you. One of the skills required for an admin assistant role is typing skills. In our program in Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, we will not be endorsed in our practicum if we will not ba able to hit our typing target of 95 words per minute with an accuracy of 97%. This has been an ongoing daily practice in our class since May. We were constantly reminded that we need to meet the 50wpm and 97% accuracy.

On the first few months, I was so devastated that I can only hit 35 wpm with 97 % accuracy. This score if far too low for our goal. I kep practicing for an hour everyday. Sometimes, I will skip my personal typing trest goal that I set. After couple of days, it still did not improve. I was at the verge of quiting and gicing up. I thought that only typing will ruin my dreams.

I assessed myself and identify my areas to improve. I realized that I need to persevere in order to meet my goal. This time I make it a point to always start and end my day by doing at least an hour of typing. I will not stop until I did not beat my previous days score.

I noticed that as the days go by, when I am constantly pushing myself to betterment, the better my typing score becomes. Come my dreaded day comes, my hands are shaking and trembling. I breath deep and release the tension that I have. I started placing my fingers in the home buttons on the keyboard. I started moving my fingers as to how I read each word on the screen. After several minutes, the screen froze for a moment and then later on showed my score. Voila! It was 50 wpm and 97% accuracy.

I can't believe my eyes but I know that the only antagonist we have in achieving and mastering our skill, is our ownselves. We always has to keep moving and improving so that we can master something.

Eventhough I already meet the required typing speed and accuracy to be able to be endorsed to practicum, still, I will keep mastering my typing skills because I know it does not stop here, and I still need to learn more things about it so I can be at my best.
